"A Marie Laurencin for the Ear" was how Jean Cocteau described Germaine Tailleferre, the only female member of the Groupe des Six — alongside Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, and Francis Poulenc. The comparison to Laurencin's decorative watercolours was an oversimplification that unfortunately stuck, lending her music an undeserved reputation for lightness and naivety. A more fitting comparison, given the richness of her sound palette and her formal ambition, would be with the vivid, structurally bold canvases of Sonia Delaunay.

Born on 19 April 1892 at Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Tailleferre began studying at the Paris Conservatoire, supported from the outset by her whole family — her mother, sisters, brothers, and wider circle of cousins and relations all encouraged her early musical education and helped open doors. Her father alone held reservations about a musical career for a young woman, though he found himself something of a lone voice on the matter within the family, and eventually came to accept her vocation. She won first prizes in solfège, counterpoint, harmony, and fugue. It was Erik Satie who was the first major figure to champion her music: hearing her two-piano work Jeux de Plein Air in 1917, he declared her his "musical daughter" — a mark of affection she herself recalled with pride — and invited her into the circle then called the Nouveaux Jeunes. Jean Cocteau became the group's publicist and ideological champion, Henri Collet's 1920 articles in Comœdia gave them their famous name, and the Groupe des Six was born. The musical friendships forged there — with Milhaud, Poulenc, Auric, Honegger — remained sources of mutual support and affection throughout her life, long after the group had formally dissolved.

Her Conservatoire years also brought her into the vibrant artistic circles of Montmartre and Montparnasse: Apollinaire, Laurencin, Léger, Cendrars, Éluard, Aragon, Picasso, Modigliani, Braque. These were formative intellectual connections. The first concert of the Nouveaux Jeunes, on 15 January 1918 in the atelier of one of her painter friends, featured her Jeux de Plein Air and her Sonatine pour Quatuor à Cordes — placing her at the very origin of the most important French musical movement of the interwar period.

Tailleferre was a pioneer of film music. Her orchestral fragment Ban'da (1925), whose exact purpose remains unclear but which may relate to the wave of Citroën expedition films then in circulation, makes her one of the earliest French composers to work at the intersection of concert music and cinema. She composed the score for the Citroën documentary La Croisière Jaune (1933, dir. Léon Poirier), and her work in this period brought her into contact with the conductor and arranger Maurice Jaubert — whom she described in her memoirs as "a kind of saint" — who conducted her score for the documentary Sur les Routes d'Acier and who smoothed the path for her in the often difficult world of film production. She went on to write music for a substantial body of documentaries, features, and television films throughout the 1930s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, continuing well into her old age. Charlie Chaplin, whom she met in New York through her first husband, reportedly wished to engage her for his own films.

Her literary collaborations were equally significant, and place her firmly within the main currents of French modernism. Paul Claudel commissioned her music for his dramatic ode Sous le Rempart d'Athènes (1927). Her Cantate du Narcisse was written with Paul Valéry (1937–42). After the war, her engagement with the surrealist and absurdist writers that defined the French literary scene became increasingly central. The ballet Paris-Magie (1949), with an argument by the surrealist poet and novelist Lise Deharme and costumes by the Belgian surrealist painter Félix Labisse, was premièred at the Opéra Comique to considerable success — its score is published by Musik Fabrik. She set texts by Philippe Soupault (opera La Petite Sirène, 1957), collaborated with Eugène Ionesco (Le Maître), and worked closely with Jean Tardieu and his Club d'essai at the RTF, which became a vital commissioning platform for new music after the Liberation. She also set Guillaume Apollinaire, Robert Pinget, and Lord Byron (in French translation), and her five pocket operas Du Style Galant au Style Méchant (1955) were co-written with her niece Denise Centore. These literary affinities show a composer deeply embedded in Parisian intellectual life, not on its margins.

From around 1923 she spent considerable time with Maurice Ravel at Montfort-l'Amaury, where long walks gave way to long sessions at the piano. Ravel gave her detailed advice on orchestration — advice she put to brilliant use throughout her career. Her First Violin Sonata, written for her friend Jacques Thibaud, was premièred by Thibaud and Alfred Cortot in 1922. Her ballet Le Marchand d'Oiseaux was a great success with the Ballets Suédois in 1923, and led to a commission from the Princesse de Polignac — the great Parisian patroness of the avant-garde, in whose salon she encountered Rubinstein and Stravinsky — for a Piano Concerto, premièred by Cortot in London in December 1924. Stravinsky's verdict — "It is honest music!" — was, as Tailleferre noted, extraordinary praise from a man who detested the music of others. Ravel's and Tailleferre's visits ended suddenly in 1930 — most likely because her marriage to Jean Lageat made such meetings difficult — though the depth of the friendship endured: the late Madame Claude Moreau, former curator of the Ravel House in Montfort-l'Amaury, told the Tailleferre Estate that Tailleferre was among those waiting at the hospital on the day of Ravel's fatal operation in 1937.

In 1925 she married the American caricaturist Ralph Barton; the couple moved to France in 1927. She completed the ballet La Nouvelle Cythère, intended for the ill-fated 1929 Ballets Russes season cancelled after Diaghilev's death. Believed lost for many years, the two-piano score is now published by Musik Fabrik, with orchestrations by Paul Wehage. Her marriage ended in 1929; Barton returned to America and died by suicide some months later. Her Six Chansons Françaises, setting medieval and Renaissance texts on the theme of women in difficult relationships, reflects something of this period.

In 1931 she gave birth to her daughter Françoise, and in 1932 married Jean Lageat. Despite the tensions of this marriage she produced some of her most ambitious work: the Divertissement dans le Style Louis XV; the Violin Concerto, premièred in the USA in 1938 under Georges Enesco; and her masterpiece the Concerto Grosso for two pianos, saxophone quartet, eight solo voices, and orchestra (1934). She completed her Trois Études pour Piano et Orchestre in 1942, then fled occupied France with her daughter via Spain and Portugal to Philadelphia, where they spent the war years.

After returning to France in 1946 she resettled in Grasse. The ballet Paris-Magie was premièred at the Opéra Comique in 1949. Major works followed: the Second Piano Concerto, the Harp Sonata, the Concerto for Flute, Piano and Orchestra, and the ballet Parisiana (Copenhagen, 1953). Lageat and Tailleferre divorced in 1955. The Concerto des Vaines Paroles for baritone, piano, and orchestra (1956) — whose full score was long believed lost, but survives through a broadcast recording and has been recovered and published by Musik Fabrik — was written for the baritone Bernard Lefort and premièred with Tailleferre herself at the piano and the RTF Philharmonic conducted by Inghelbrecht. The text was by Jean Tardieu, whose Club d'essai at the RTF had become after the Liberation a vital platform for new music, commissioning numerous works from Tailleferre and providing her with a creative home at a time when concert halls were slow to programme living composers — a collaboration that exemplifies the playful intellectual wit the two shared. A brief engagement with twelve-tone technique yielded La Petite Sirène (1957, text by Philippe Soupault) and the Toccata for Two Pianos.

During the 1960s and 70s she continued composing for film and television and wrote the Concerto pour Deux Guitares (discovered at Radio France and published by Musik Fabrik) and Hommage à Rameau. Her friend the conductor Désiré Dondeyne encouraged her late turn to the symphonic band. At 84 she took a post as accompanist at the École Alsacienne. Her last series of works includes the Sonata for Two Pianos, Sérénade en La mineur, Choral et Variations, and the Sonate Champêtre. Her final major work, the Concerto de la Fidélité for high voice and orchestra — premièred at the Paris Opera — was a commission from the French Cultural Ministry, arranged through her old friend and concert partner the baritone Bernard Lefort, who as director of the Paris Opera watched over Tailleferre with great care and affection during her last years. She received the Médaille de la Ville de Paris and the Prix Italia, and composed until a few weeks before her death on 7 November 1983 in Paris. She is buried at Quincy-Voisins near Meaux.

Through the publications of Musik Fabrik, undertaken with the full accord of the Tailleferre Estate, it is now finally possible to have a complete picture of the music of one of the greatest musical minds of the twentieth century — a composer of remarkable range, formal intelligence, and creative longevity, who held her own at the very centre of French musical and literary life for seven decades.
