Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849)
Frédéric Chopin was born on 1 March 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, Poland, and died in Paris on 17 October 1849. After studies at the Warsaw Conservatory and an early concert career in Poland and Vienna, he chose to settle in Paris in 1831, never to return to his homeland. It was in Paris that he met the novelist George Sand, with whom he lived for nine years, spending several of their winters together in Mallorca.
One of the most significant composers of the Romantic era and one of the most celebrated pianists of the nineteenth century, Chopin wrote almost exclusively for the piano, creating a body of work — nocturnes, études, mazurkas, polonaises, waltzes, preludes, ballades, and sonatas — that transformed the instrument's expressive and technical possibilities. Together with Franz Liszt he is considered a founding figure of modern piano technique. His music, deeply coloured by Polish folk idiom and by a highly personal harmonic language, has never left the repertoire.
