Première of Gregory Sullivan Isaacs new work Night into Dawn, by Gary Levinson and The Violins of Hope

Musik Fabrik is proud to announce the première of an important work for string orchestra by noted American composer Gregory Sullivan Isaacs. The work, entitled «Night Into Dawn » was commissioned by Gary Levinson (Senior Principal Associate Concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony.) for The Violins of Hope, Miami and The Young Israel Congregation and The Shul of Bal Harbour. The work will be premièred on December 2nd, 2019 at 8 P.M. at The Shul Sanctuary, 9540 Collins Avenue, Surfside, FL

The Violins of Hope are violins that were played by Jews during the Holocaust and have been restored by Amnon Weinstein. Night Into Dawn is a programmatic work that describes the Night, the decent of anti-Semitism, the brutality of the Holocaust and the Dawn, the renewal of the Jewish spirit.

“Since the Violins of Hope project is about the restored instruments, I decided to write individual and unique parts for each player rather than dividing them into larger groups such as first and second violins,” said Isaacs. The piece lasts about 12 minutes and Isaacs will conduct this world premiere performance.

Violinist Gary Levinson will sit in the solo violin chair and also act as concertmaster. “Gary and I are close friends and I am grateful for his energy that made this all possible,” said Isaacs.

UNDELIVERED “Isaacs’ clean, neo-romantic, richly melodic musical idiom was skillfully contrapuntal, and suited the text and subject matter well. A prefatory section included the words of Daniel Webster, followed by a closing poem by librettist Calvin. Latin verses from the Roman Catholic mass for the dead provided a fine verbal counterweight to the frankly political but often lofty texts by Kennedy, and his notably excellent speechwriters. “Undelivered is well worth a listen for anyone interested in Kennedy, twentieth-century Americana, or contemporary music” (Wayne Gay, D Magazine)
“Musically, Isaacs’ style is varied within a basic neo-Romantic framework. Soft, high notes played by a solo violin at the beginning signal that the work will not avoid statements of lyrical beauty (the same atmosphere returns at the end). The music becomes grittier at times, especially in a section devoted to the words of a cynical politician, but Kennedy’s speech is treated musically with dignified solemnity” (Ollin Chism, Fort Worth Star Telegram).
“You can add Henry Faust to that short list of successful single-singer operas (Schoenberg’s Ewartung and Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine) ... it proved to be a moving experience. Isaacs’ music, cast in traditional forms, such as fugue, passacaglia, rondo and variation, is always accessible... often strikingly beautiful, as in the Ländler that closes act two” (John Guinn, Detroit Free Press).

I am much drawn to the final ending, where the passacaglia figure, with its slowly-slipping triads, rolls over and over again, supporting the lament of the actor. This is truly lovely, inspired and effective. Agitated sections, where things really barrel along, are also powerful and striking. You also present the essential craziness of Faust (anyone would be crazy to enter into such a bargain). This craziness is aided by the bare set, the missing characters (missing in physical form), the grubbiness of Faust (unshaven, raving away in his pajamas, etc). Biography

The American composer Gregory Sullivan Isaacs is the author of a catalogue of vocal and instrumental works for both large and chamber ensembles. He has been feted for his “clean, neo-romantic, richly melodic musical idiom” (D Magazine). Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in composition, he has also received a grant from the American Music Center and an ASCAP award for his commitment to American music. Recent works include his critically acclaimed Henry Faust, a three-act opera for tenor and piano, produced for public television, and a cantata for singers and a chamber ensemble, UNDELIVERED (libretto by Suzanne Calvin), based on President Kennedy’s final, but undelivered speech, which received a highly successful premiere in May 2014. Recent chamber music includes Dance Suite for Violin and Piano (2015) written for Gary Levinson, Senior Associate Concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony.

Mr. Isaacs, also an instrumentalist and tenor vocalist, began his musical training at the high school division of the Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan). He studied at the universities of Michigan and Miami and holds a Master of Music in vocal performance from Indiana University (Bloomington). His list of teachers and mentors include Thor Johnson, Barre Hill, Martha Lipton, Ivan Davis, Frederick Fennell, Leslie Bassett, Tibor Kozma, Gustav Meier, and Pierre Bernac.

After his singing career, Isaacs continued his compositional work while holding numerous musical directorships, as well as composer-in-residence appointments, with opera, musical theater, choral, and symphonic organizations. In 2009, he was chosen as a fellow in the NEA/Columbia Music Journalism Institute. He is currently the Senior Classical Music Critic for the respected on-line performing arts magazine, Theater Jones. He also writes for other publications such as the Fort Worth Star Telegram and teaches private lessons in voice and composition. Isaacs is currently coaching performers and chamber ensembles as well as teaching voice and composition at the Dallas Music Academy. He also offers a series of classes on music history and literature throughout the year.
