Jean-Baptiste ARBAN
Biography
Joseph Jean-Baptiste Arban was born in Lyon on February 28, 1825. He began his musical career in the Military Band of the French Navy, and was part of the battalion which was on the ship “La Belle Poule” during the trip to Sainte-Hélène to carry Napoléon’s ashes back to France. In 1841, Arban entered the Paris Conservatory in the trumpet class of il François Georges Auguste Dauverné where he earned a first prize in 1845. After leaving the Conservatory, Arban went back to the Marine Band where he became a cornet player, staying at this post until 1852.
A friend of Adolphe Sax, Arban worked with Sax on his instruments starting in 1846, writing one of the first examination pieces for the saxophone for Sax’s class at the Paris Conservatory, and in 1857, Arban was named professor of Saxhorn at the French Military conservatory. In 1864, Arban was named the Cornet professor at the Paris Conservatory, the same year as the first publication of his “Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn “. After briefly leaving the Conservatory for a concert tour of Saint-Petersbourg at the invitation of the Tsar Alexander II, Arban returned to the Conservatory in 1880 and began making the modications to his instrument which later became the “cornet Arban-Courtois”. Until his death in 1889 in Paris, Arbn continued to improve the cornet.

Joseph Jean-Baptiste Arban est né à Lyon le 28 fevrier 1825. Il a commencé sa carrière de musicien dans la musique de la Marine, faisant partie de la bataillon qui se trouvait sur la goëlette Belle Poule lors de son voyage à Sainte-Hélène pour chercher les cendres de Napoléon. En 1841, il entre au conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, dans la classe de trompette de François Georges Auguste Dauverné où il obtient en 1845 un premier prix. Après être sorti du conservatoire, Arban rejoint la Marine où il passe au pupitre de cornet jusqu'en 1852. .
Ami d’Adolphe Sax, il travaille avec Sax sur ses instruments dès 1846, écrivant une des premières pièces de concours pour la classe de Saxophone au Conservatoire, et, en 1857, Arban est nommé professeur de saxhorn à l'École militaire en 1857. En 1864, Arban devient professeur de cornet au conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, l’année de l’éditions de sa “Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn .” Après avoir quitté brièvement son poste au Conservatoire pour une tournée de concerts en 1874 à Saint-Petersbourg à la demande du tsar Alexandre II, Arban revient au conservatoire en 1880 et commence de faire des modifications sur le cornet et l’embouchure de l’instrument qui deviendrai le “cornet Arban-Courtois”. Jusqu’à sa mort en 1889 à Paris, il travaille sur l’amélioration du cornet
