Biography in English

Ange Flégier

Ange Flégier (1846–1927) was born in Marseilles (France) and admitted to the Conservatoire in Paris in 1866, studying composition with Ambroise Thomas. His first success was the mélodie Stances, written to a text by his friend Ferdinand Loviot. In 1869, Flégier was among the six finalists of the Prix de Rome competition with the cantata Francesca da Rimini. Starting in 1870, he worked as a music critic for the daily paper Le Petit Marseillais and began to have his works published, mostly by small firms. He had to wait for the formidable success of his mélodie Le Cor before he could begin to make a comfortable living from his music. Included in Flégier’s oeuvre, which contains about 350 entries, are about one hundred piano solos and nearly 120 mélodies, many of which he orchestrated. Flégier’s song oeuvre is quite similar to that of Henri Duparc in that the piano is treated as if it were a full orchestra. Some of the songs require a large range and great vocal prowess, encompassing two octaves with nuances from pianississimo to fortissimo.

The Opéra in Marseille premiered Fatma, his only one-act opéra-comique. From 1877 to 1884, he again worked as a musical critic, this time for Le Journal de Marseille. Among his works, important premières included Ossian, a poème lyrique for soloists, chorus and orchestra; Scènes antiques, an orchestral suite; the Fantaisie-ballet, a divertissement chorégraphique; the unusual Trio for clarinet, bassoon and oboe; Naenia, an adaptation symphonique for narrator, cello, violin, horns and piano; and the first-ever Dixtuor for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and string quintet, which received the Prix Chartier of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The word dixtuor, Flégier’s invention, entered the Larousse dictionary of the French language the following year. In 1900, his Concerto in F major for piano and orchestra was premiered in Paris, and several works were performed by the official orchestra of the Exposition Universelle. The Opéra in Marseilles later premiered his Grognards et Poilus, an opera in one act and three scenes.

Beginning in the 1890s, Flégier also devoted himself to his two other interests, visual arts and poetry. He created about one hundred watercolours and drawings, donating several to the Saint-Saëns Museum in Dieppe, the Digne Museum, and the Ziem Museum in Martigues, of which he was one of the co-founders. He compiled a volume of poetry and memoirs entitled A travers la vie as well as a collection of tales and poetry in the Provençal language entitled Per dire ooun cabanoun. In 1902, Flégier was awarded the Prix Chartier for the totality of his chamber music works. Already decorated with the Palmes Académiques in 1884, he was awarded the title of Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur by the edict of July 19, 1903.

On October 8, 1927, Ange Flégier passed away at the age of 81. “Many of his songs, beautifully inspired and crafted, obtained great and deserved success,” insisted Le Figaro shortly after his death. The critic Fernand Guy wrote: “Musical experts appreciate Flégier as a strong composer whose talent is especially varied and abundant.”

This project originated with the recording Ange Flégier: Mélodies for Bass Voice and Piano with American bass Jared Schwartz and pianist Mary Dibbern, released in September 2016 by Toccata Classics (London). They located out-of-print scores of songs especially suited to bass voice and collaborated with us on the editing process.

Flégier: Mélodies for Bass Voice and Piano — Jared Schwartz, Mary Dibbern — Toccata Classics

Ce projet a été initié par Jared Schwartz, basse américaine, et la pianiste Mary Dibbern, à l’occasion de l’enregistrement Ange Flégier : Mélodies for Bass Voice and Piano, disponible depuis septembre 2016 chez Toccata Classics (Londres).
