Biographical Sketch
Jan Freidlin was born in Chita, Russia. In 1971 he graduated
from the Odessa Conservatory with a degree in composition. He served as
Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Odessa Philharmonic
Society Jazz Orchestra. From 1974 until 1990 Freidlin was the head of
the music theory and composition department at the famous Stolyarsky
Special Music School in Odessa.
The composer is now a professor of composition at the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel. Freidlin has composed music for many television programs, 26 theatre plays and 7 feature films. Many of his works have been performed in Russia, Israel, Germany, Australia, and the U.S. He has won many distinguished awards for composition including the Grand Prix of Warna Cinema Festival for the original music for the movie "The Summer has Begun" (1978) and 1st Prize for his chamber work "Twilight Music" for flute, violin and piano in the 2002 Tampa Bay Composers Forum. In 1995 his cycle for guitar "Letters from Arles" won the second prize at the GFA "Set Piece" competition.
Among his compositions are three symphonies, the ballet "Guernica," a double concerto for flute, piano and strings, several works for chamber orchestra, two string quartets and other chamber music works, several large-scale compositions for piano and many vocal works. Recently, Freidlin's Symphony no.2 has been very successfully performed in Santiago by Chili State Symphony under the direction of M. Haran and his "POEM OF THE CONTRASTS" , commissioned by IPO, was premièred by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
Jan Freidlin est né à Chiti, en Russie. En 1971, il a eu un diplôme en composition musicale du Conservatoire d'Odessa. Il est par la suite nommé Directeur Artistique et Chef d'Orchestre de l'Orchestre de Jazz de la Philharmonique d'Odessa. Entre 1974 et 1990, Freidlin était directeur de la department de la théorie et de la composition musicale à la célébre école de Musique Stolyarsky à Odessa.
Jan Freidlan est actuellement professeur de composition musicale à l'Université de Tel-Aviv, Isreal. Freidlin a composé beaucoup de musique pour la télévision, pour 26 productions théatrales et pour 7 films de long-métrage. Ses oeuvres ont été programmées en Russie, en Israel, en Allemagne, Australie et aux États-Unis. Le compositeur a gagné plusieurs prix de compositon, y compris le Grande Prix de la Festival pour le Cinema de Warna pour la musique originale pour le film "L'Éte a commencé" (1978) et le premier prix du concours 2002 du Forum des compositeurs de Tampa Bay (Floride) pour son oeuvre "Twilight Music" pour Flûte, Violon et Piano. En 1995, son cycle pour guitar "Letters from Arles" a gagné le deuxième prix dans le GFA concours pour une "Pièce imposée".
Dans la catalogue de ses oeuvres se trouvent trois symphones, le ballet "Guernica", un double concerto pour Flûte, Piano et cordes, plusieurs oeuvres pour orchestre de chambre, deux quatuor à cordes et d'autres oeuvres de chambres, plusieurs grandes oeuvres pour piano et des oeuvres vocales. Son Symphonie no. 2 a été programmé par l'orchestre d'état du Chili sous la direction de M. Haran et son "POEM OF THE CONTRASTS", une commande de la Philharmonique d'Israël, a été créé par cette ensemble sous la direction de Zubin Mehta.
