The first Mass composed entirely by women to be performed at Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome · Seven composers from the Marche region of Italy · Founded Recanati, 2001
A Historic Achievement

Premièred in the Basilica della Santa Casa, Loreto, 16 May 2004.

Performed at the Basilica of Saint Peter's in the Vatican, 9 December 2006 — the first Mass composed entirely by women to be performed there, during a liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Angelo Comastri, President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro.

The Messa Virgo Lauretana

The Messa Virgo Lauretana is a collaborative Mass for SATB mixed chorus, composed jointly by the seven members of the Artemusica association — full name Artemusi(c)a — Compositrici per le Marche — founded in Recanati in 2001. Each movement was assigned to one of the seven composers, with the Introitus composed collectively as a group.

The work was conceived to be accessible to amateur choral societies while maintaining full artistic integrity. It was commissioned in collaboration with the Municipal Culture office of Loreto, with the support of Prof. Patricia Adkins Chiti, President of the Adkins Chiti Foundation: Women in Music, Rome, and with the approval of the Pontifical Delegation of Loreto in the person of Archbishop Angelo Comastri — who followed and encouraged the project throughout.

The score is published by Musik Fabrik as a complete vocal score, and is available below.

In Their Own Words

The Association "Artemusi(c)a — Compositrici per le Marche", founded in Recanati in 2001 and composed of seven musicians from the Marche region — all graduates in composition from various conservatories — wanted ideally to place the beginning of its activities under the protection of the Most Holy Virgin, seen as an ideal example of complete womanhood and loving motherhood. Six of us are married and five are already mothers.

The conception of the Missa Virgo Lauretana began spontaneously in the autumn of 2001. Defining the collaborative structure of the composition and drafting the individual movements took approximately one year.

The project slowly took shape thanks to the enthusiastic collaboration of the Municipal Culture office of Loreto (Ms M. Teresa Schiavoni) and Prof. Patricia Adkins Chiti, President of the Adkins Chiti Foundation: Women in Music, Rome — with the approval of the Pontifical Delegation of Loreto in the person of Archbishop Angelo Comastri, who encouraged and followed our work with great warmth.

This project seeks to go beyond the simple concert: we wished to reflect on the values of life and of Christian commitment, in the name of the Most Holy Virgin, offering our witness of faith through music. For us, given these aims, it had a profound and special significance to perform the Mass in Loreto, in the Basilica della Santa Casa, on 16 May 2004.

We are further grateful to our dear friend Archbishop Angelo Comastri — now President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro — for permitting the performance in the Basilica of Saint Peter's in the Vatican during the liturgy he celebrated on 9 December 2006.
