James Reese Europe

Biography

James Reese Europe (February 22, 1880 – May 9, 1919), sometimes known as Jim Europe, was an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger, and composer. He was the leading figure on the African-American music scene of New York City in the 1910s. In 1910 Europe organized the Clef Club, a society for African Americans in the music industry. In 1912 the club made history when it played a concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Colored Music Settlement School. The Clef Club Orchestra, while not a jazz band, was the first band to play proto-jazz at Carnegie Hall. He was a close associate of the dancing team of Irene and Verson Castle, with whom he collaborated on a number of new dance forms, including the “fox-trot”. He organized the military band of the 369th Infantry Regiment, the Harlem Hellfighters during the First World War and this orchestra introduced ragtime and Jazz into Europe. He died in 1919, stabbed by one of his musicians and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary in Washington.

James Reese Europe (22 février, 1880 – 9 mai, 1919), était un chef d’orchestre, compositeur et arrangeur américaine, spécialisé dans le Ragtime et la musique de jazz. Une personalité très connue dans le monde de la musique afro-américaine à New York dans les années 1910, il organisa le Clef Club, un syndicat pour les musiciens noir-américains. En 1912, cette société a presenté le premier concert par les musiciens noirs au célèbre Carnegie Hall, au bénéfice d’une école de musique le “Colored Music Settlement School“. Un associé d’Irène et Vernon Castle, il a participé avec eux dans l’essor de la musique populaire distinée au la danse en société, y crompris pour la création du “Fox”. Militaire, il participera à la Première Guerre mondiale dans le 369e régiment d'infanterie, les Harlem Hellfighters et son orchestre participera à l'introduction du ragtime et du jazz en Europe. Il meurt poignardé en 1919 dans une dispute avec l'un des membres de son groupe et repose au cimetière national d'Arlington.
