David W. SOLOMONS

David W Solomons began by composing songs for alto and classical guitar, just for himself to perform, then he gradually branched out into other forms of ensemble and choral music. His priority is lyricism, and he finds his melodies in modes of all kinds, Dorian, Japanese and even Octatonic (although he does also use the more familiar modes). His melodies also often derive naturally out of poetry, even his instrumental pieces can have an origin based on the rhythms of certain poems, which are sometimes blatantly quoted in the titles, such as, for example, "Pretty How Town" and "Little Laser Lady" in the suite for recorder orchestra.

As a performer David sings alto in various choirs and occasionally as a soloist. His musical experiences with these choirs often informs his music and, in turn, the choirs sometimes perform his pieces, including a cantata entitled Manchester Magnificat, a comical double choir arrangement of Old Mother Hubbard (the Hubbard Saga), a steamy number based on the Song of Songs (Upon my bed by Night), a Christmas song for choir called Alleyways and various liturgical pieces.

His works have been featured in two CDs recorded by Tubalaté (a noted English Tuba Quartet) and his song selection: "Songs of Solomons"has been recorded by Stephen Taylor of the Tallis Scholars. His most current recording project involves a collaboration with the New Zealand-based Guitar virtuoso Bruce Paine in a CD of David's works for solo Guitar and Guitar and Cello.
